Regulator: Ministry of Welfare (Labklājības ministrija); practice governed by the Law on Social Services and Social Assistance (Sociālo pakalpojumu un sociālās palīdzības likums); local governments responsible for ensuring competence improvement and supervision
CPDSocial work is a regulated profession by required qualification: to work as a social work specialist (social worker, caritative social worker, social carer, social rehabilitator, or social assistance organiser) a person must hold the education specified in the Law on Social Services and Social Assistance. However, Latvia does not operate an individual state certificate/registration for social workers renewed on a fixed CPD cycle (unlike psychologists). The Law (Section 10 and related provisions) instead obliges local governments/employers to ensure ongoing improvement of vocational/professional competence for their social work specialists through training (apmācības) and supervision (supervīzija), with the State co-financing 50% of these competence-improvement expenses; detailed conditions are set by Cabinet regulation.
