Sweden CE Requirements by License

CPDSocial work is NOT a licensed/protected profession in Sweden. The socionom title reflects completion of a university degree (socionomexamen, a 3.5-year / 210 ECTS programme) and is not among the 22 legitimationsyrken; Socialstyrelsen issues no legitimation for social workers and there is no statutory register-maintenance or renewal system. Accordingly there is no legally mandated periodic CPD and no fixed hour requirement. A narrow exception exists for competence to carry out certain statutory child-welfare tasks under the Social Services Act (Socialtjanstlagen), where employers must ensure staff have adequate education/experience, but this is an employer competence duty for specific duties, not an individual CPD-hours licence mandate. Continuing education is arranged by employers (municipalities) and encouraged by the professional union (Akademikerforbundet SSR) on a voluntary basis.

CPDPsychotherapist (legitimerad psykoterapeut) is one of the 22 protected, licensed health-care professions (legitimationsyrken) in Sweden. Legitimation is granted by Socialstyrelsen under the Patient Safety Act (Patientsakerhetslag 2010:659, Chapter 4) after completing the postgraduate psychotherapist programme (psykoterapeutprogrammet, requiring a prior relevant health/behavioural qualification and clinical experience). The licence is granted for life with no expiry, no periodic renewal, and no fixed statutory number of CPD/CE hours required to maintain it. As for all licensed health-care personnel, Chapter 6, Section 1 of the Patient Safety Act imposes a general duty to work in accordance with science and proven experience (vetenskap och beprovad erfarenhet). There is no mandatory renewal-linked CPD hour count.

CPDPsychologist (legitimerad psykolog) is one of the 22 protected, licensed health-care professions (legitimationsyrken) in Sweden. Legitimation is granted by Socialstyrelsen under the Patient Safety Act (Patientsakerhetslag 2010:659, Chapter 4) after a 5-year psychology programme (psykologprogrammet) plus a supervised practical year (PTP - praktisk tjanstgoring for psykologer). The licence is granted for life with no expiry, no periodic renewal, and no fixed statutory number of CPD/CE hours required to maintain it. Instead, Chapter 6, Section 1 of the Patient Safety Act imposes a general legal duty on all health-care personnel to perform their work in accordance with science and proven experience (vetenskap och beprovad erfarenhet), which implies keeping competence current. Competence is enforced through supervision and, in serious cases, revocation (Chapter 8, Section 3) rather than through a mandatory hours-tracking or renewal system.

CPDThere is no standalone 'marriage and family therapist' licence or protected title in Sweden. Couple and family therapy (par- och familjeterapi / familjeterapi) is delivered under the regulated psychotherapist title (legitimerad psykoterapeut), where family/systemic therapy is one of the recognised psychotherapy orientations, or by other licensed professionals (e.g. psychologists) working within their competence. Practitioners providing regulated psychotherapy must therefore hold the protected psykoterapeut legitimation (see the Psychotherapist record). No separate CPD hour mandate applies.

CPDBehavior analysis / BCBA is not a regulated or protected professional title in Sweden and is not licensed by Socialstyrelsen. There is no Swedish statutory CPD requirement. Individuals who voluntarily hold the US BCBA credential are subject to the private Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) recertification rules (32 continuing education units per 2-year cycle, including ethics and supervision units), but this is a private certification obligation, not a Swedish legal requirement.
