Psychotherapeut (Approbation) — formerly Psychologischer Psychotherapeut and Kinder- und Jugendlichenpsychotherapeut
Regulator: Landespsychotherapeutenkammern (12 state Chambers of Psychotherapists) under the state Heilberufe-/Kammergesetze and their Fortbildungsordnungen; coordinated nationally by the Bundespsychotherapeutenkammer (BPtK). Statutory-health-insurance continuing-education duty set by §95d SGB V and enforced by the Kassenärztlichen Vereinigungen.
250hours / credits / 5-year renewal cycle
No live / interactive hours required — all hours may be self-study
Mandated topics

No specific subject mandates — general CE hours only.

Home study: No fixed minimum of live/interactive hours; the Fortbildungsordnung (based on the BPtK Muster-Fortbildungsordnung) awards points across categories (lectures/seminars, structured e-learning with proof of learning, self-study, teaching/publication). Self-study of professional literature (Kategorie E) is capped at a flat ~10 Fortbildungspunkte per year; articles/book publications (Kategorie F) ~5 points each. All counted events must be accredited by a psychotherapist or physician chamber.

Board notes: Two overlapping duties: (1) a berufsrechtliche Fortbildungspflicht that applies to ALL practising chamber members (e.g. §15 of the state Berufsordnung) requiring members to keep skills current — a general duty, evidenced by the chamber's Fortbildungszertifikat; and (2) the statutory-insurance duty under §95d SGB V requiring Vertragspsychotherapeut*innen (KV-licensed) and psychotherapists employed in §108 SGB V hospitals to earn at least 250 Fortbildungspunkte within a rolling 5-year period (Fünfjahreszeitraum), proven by the chamber Fortbildungszertifikat. Failure to prove statutory-insurance CE leads to fee (Honorar) cuts of 10% then 25% and possible loss of Zulassung; a 2-year catch-up window applies. The 250/5-year benchmark is the nationwide standard adopted by all state chambers' Fortbildungsordnungen. Since the 2020 PsychThG reform the profession is a unified 'Psychotherapeut' license (direct Approbation after a Master + state exam, then Weiterbildung to a Fachpsychotherapeut); existing Psychologische Psychotherapeut*innen and Kinder- und Jugendlichenpsychotherapeut*innen keep their titles and are subject to the same Fortbildungspflicht.
