Home study: Minimum 20 hours must be Category I (formally organized, in-person courses/workshops/seminars/conferences, plus academic credit courses). Category II - which includes online courses, webinars, pre-recorded/non-interactive programs, distance learning and home-study - is therefore capped at 20 hours.

Board notes: 40 CEUs/2 years for LCSW-C/LMSW/LGSW (30 for Licensed Bachelor Social Worker, with 15 Category I min). Under COMAR 10.42.06, online/webinar/pre-recorded/home-study formats are explicitly Category II (capped at 20), so the 20-hour Category I minimum functions as a live/in-person requirement (academic credit courses also qualify as Category I). The 3-hour anti-oppressive Category I requirement took effect with October 31, 2024 renewals. Ethics 3 hours may be Category I or II. Biennial renewal on October 31; CE tracked via CE Broker.

Maryland

No specific subject mandates — general CE hours only.

Home study: At least 30 of 40 CEUs must be Category A (formally organized courses, workshops, seminars, symposiums, juried publications). No more than 10 CEUs may be Category B (informal activities including distance/self-study learning, colloquia, guest lectures, case conferences, formal supervision).

Board notes: Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists. COMAR 10.58.05.03 requires 40 CEUs per biennial renewal with a minimum of 30 Category A and a maximum of 10 Category B. The regulation sets NO mandatory topic-specific CE (no ethics, cultural-competency, or other required subject). Distance/self-study learning is Category B (capped at 10); the 30 Category A hours are formal but need not be strictly in-person/synchronous, so no fixed live-hour count is mandated. Excess CEUs do not carry over; retain records 4 years.

Board notes: Board of Examiners of Psychologists, COMAR 10.36.02.04. 40 CE hours per 2-year reporting period; reporting period keyed to license number/renewal date. No live/in-person mandate. The 3-hour supervision requirement is conditional on having supervised psychology associates. Psychology associates have a lower 20-hour requirement (with a 10-hour independent-study cap) and the same 3-hour ethics/laws and 3-hour cultural-diversity requirements.

Home study: No Maryland-specific cap; BACB permits online/recorded ACE-provider CEUs (learning and self-paced formats broadly allowed).

Board notes: Maryland licenses behavior analysts under the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists (COMAR 10.58.16), with biennial renewal. Licensure and renewal require maintaining CURRENT BACB certification (BCBA or BCBA-D), verified directly with the BACB. Maryland does not set a distinct state-specific CE hour count in COMAR; CE compliance is effectively met through BACB recertification, which requires 32 CEUs per 2-year cycle including 4 ethics CEUs (and, for those who supervise, 3 supervision CEUs). The Maryland counselor/therapist '40 CEU' track does NOT apply to behavior analysts.
