LISW-CP (Licensed Independent Social Worker - Clinical Practice)
40hours / 2-year renewal cycle
No live / interactive hours required — all hours may be self-study
Mandated topics
  • Suicide Assessment, Treatment and Management — 1 hOnly mandated topic in SC Reg Ch 110-1; added by the 2024 suicide-training law.

Home study: No home-study/online/self-study cap in the regulation; the SW rule (Reg Ch 110-1) makes no distinction between live and self-study formats.

Board notes: SC Board of Social Work Examiners requires 40 contact hours per biennial renewal period (reporting Jan 1 - Dec 31 of even years; deadline Dec 31 even years), tracked in CE Broker. Reg Ch 110-1 mandates ONLY 1 hour of suicide assessment/treatment/management; there is NO ethics-hours requirement, NO clinical-hours minimum, and NO requirement that hours be provided by a trained social worker. Some CE vendors (e.g., onlinececredits) incorrectly assert a 5-hr ethics rule, a 20-hr clinical rule, and/or a '20 hours from a trained social worker' rule - none of these appear in the verbatim regulation text. Applies to LISW-CP; LMSW/LBSW share the 40-hour rule.

LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor)
40hours / 2-year renewal cycle
No live / interactive hours required — all hours may be self-study
Mandated topics
  • Ethics — 6 hMust be specific to ethical standards for the professional license (Reg Ch 36 / CE Guidelines).
  • Suicide Assessment, Treatment and Management — 1 hConfirmed in SC Reg Ch 36 (2024 suicide-training law); not in the older 2021 CE Guidelines PDF.

Home study: No cap on online/home-study FORMAL CE - Reg Ch 36 states credit may be obtained in person OR online with no in-person minimum. A cap applies only to INFORMAL/alternative CE (presentations, publications, course prep): Reg Ch 36 allows up to 20 such hours; the 2021 CE Guidelines PDF states a 15-hour informal cap.

Board notes: SC Board of Examiners for LPC, MFT & Addiction Counselors: 40 hours per 2-year period (reporting Sep 1 - Aug 31; deadline Aug 31 of odd years), tracked in CE Broker. 40 = 6 ethics + 1 suicide + remaining practice hours. Supervisors (LPC-S) need an additional 10 hours of formal supervision CE beyond the 40. Note discrepancy between the current regulation (Ch 36: 20-hr informal cap) and the older 2021 Guidelines PDF (15-hr informal cap).

Licensed Psychologist
24hours / 2-year renewal cycle
No live / interactive hours required — all hours may be self-study
Mandated topics

No specific subject mandates — general CE hours only.

Home study: Category B (informal self-study: reading journals, self-study tapes/courses) capped at 12 of 24 hours; minimum 12 must be Category A (formal, 1:1 contact hours). A licensee may elect all 24 from Category A. No carryover of excess credits.

Board notes: SC Board of Examiners in Psychology requires 24 CE credits per 2-year biennial licensure period (Reg Ch 100), tracked via CE Broker. There are NO mandated subject-specific topics (no ethics, suicide, or diversity CE); the 2024 suicide-training law amended the counselor/MFT/social-worker rules but not the Psychology regulations. No carryover of excess credits permitted.

LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist)
40hours / 2-year renewal cycle
No live / interactive hours required — all hours may be self-study
Mandated topics
  • Ethics — 6 hMust be specific to ethical standards for the professional license (Reg Ch 36).
  • Suicide Assessment, Treatment and Management — 1 hReg Ch 36 (2024 suicide-training law).

Home study: No cap on online/home-study formal CE - Reg Ch 36 allows credit in person OR online. Informal/alternative CE (presentations, publications, course prep) capped at 20 hours per current Reg Ch 36 (older 2021 Guidelines PDF states 15).

Board notes: Same board and regulation (Ch 36) as LPC: 40 hours per 2-year period (reporting Sep 1 - Aug 31; deadline Aug 31 of odd years), tracked in CE Broker. Requirement is 6 ethics + 1 suicide within the 40; there is NO clinical-hours minimum for renewal (clinical hours apply only to initial/associate licensure, not renewal CE). Supervisors (LMFT-S) need an additional 10 hours of formal supervision CE.

BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst - national certification; SC has no separate state license)
32hours / 2-year renewal cycle
No live / interactive hours required — all hours may be self-study
Mandated topics
  • Ethics — 4 h
  • Supervision — 3 hRequired only for certificants who supervise others or supervise trainees accruing fieldwork.

Home study: No cap - BACB ACE recorded/online (learning) CEUs are broadly allowed; no state cap because SC does not regulate behavior analysts.

Board notes: South Carolina does NOT license behavior analysts (SC is absent from the BACB U.S. licensure table; licensure bills have not passed, title unprotected). CE is therefore governed solely by the BACB recertification standard: 32 CEUs per 2-year cycle, including a minimum 4 ethics CEUs and (for those who supervise) 3 supervision CEUs. No SC-specific CE rule applies.
