Regulator: Ordine degli Psicologi (regional Ordini) coordinated by the Consiglio Nazionale dell'Ordine degli Psicologi (CNOP); profession established by Legge 18 febbraio 1989, n. 56. As a health profession (professione sanitaria), continuing education is delivered through the national ECM system (Educazione Continua in Medicina) governed by the Commissione Nazionale per la Formazione Continua and administered by AGENAS.

  • General ECM continuing education across accredited events and providers relevant to the professionStandard obligation is 150 ECM credits per three-year triennium. The 2023-2025 triennium closed on 31 December 2025; the current programme is the 2026-2028 triennium under the same 150-credit standard. No fixed subject quotas by discipline; credits are earned via residential events, FAD (e-learning/home study), FSC (field/on-the-job training) and individual training (e.g. research, publications, university teaching).

Home study: No absolute statutory cap on FAD (distance/e-learning) for the general obligation; the entire 150-credit obligation can in practice be met through accredited FAD/e-learning. Individual (non-event) training such as research, publications and self-directed learning is capped by the ECM criteria (self-directed/individual learning generally limited to a defined share of the triennial total). Reductions apply for filing a formative Dossier (up to 30 credits) and for carry-over based on the prior triennium's performance.

Board notes: Psychology (Psicologo) is a state-regulated health profession; only registrants on the Albo of a regional Ordine degli Psicologi may use the title and practise. Continuing professional development is not a separate CNOP scheme but the general national ECM obligation applicable to all health professionals: 150 ECM credits per triennium, with the same reduction/exemption rules (Dossier formativo, prior-triennium carry-over of 15-30 credits, one-third reductions for maternity, illness, PNRR managerial training, university specialization courses, and declared emergency areas).
