Psychotherapist (Psicoterapeuta) - specialization
Regulator: Not a stand-alone profession: psychotherapy is a legally recognised specialization annotation on the Albo of either the Ordine degli Psicologi (CNOP) or the Ordine dei Medici (FNOMCeO), under art. 3 of Legge 56/1989, obtained after a state-recognised 4-year psychotherapy training. Continuing education is the ECM obligation of the underlying health profession (psychologist or physician).
150hours / credits / 3-year renewal cycle
No live / interactive hours required — all hours may be self-study
Mandated topics
  • Same ECM continuing-education obligation as the base health profession (psychologist or physician)There is no separate CPD credit requirement for the psychotherapy specialization. A psychotherapist meets CPD through the standard 150 ECM credits per triennium of their base Albo (Psicologo or Medico).

Home study: As per the general ECM rules of the base profession; no separate cap for the psychotherapy specialization.

Board notes: Psicoterapeuta is a specialization (annotazione) recorded on the psychologists' or physicians' Albo, not an independent licensed profession, so it carries no distinct CPD scheme. CPD is discharged through the holder's underlying ECM obligation (150 credits/triennium). Note: 'counselor' (counseling in the Anglo-American sense) is NOT a regulated profession in Italy; generic counseling activity is not protected by an Ordine, so this record represents the closest Italian regulated equivalent (the psychotherapy specialization).
