Alberta

• Continuing Education — 15 hMinimum 15 of the 40 credits must be Continuing Education (courses, workshops, formal learning). At least one goal and associated activity required in this category.
• Professional Engagement — 15 hMinimum 15 of the 40 credits must be Professional Engagement (e.g., committee/volunteer work, mentoring, presenting, research). At least one goal and associated activity required in this category.
• Flexible allocation — 10 hThe remaining 10 credits may be allocated to either Continuing Education or Professional Engagement at the registrant's discretion.

Home study: No explicit cap on self-directed vs. live/interactive learning. Credits are earned across the Continuing Education and Professional Engagement categories; format is at the registrant's discretion within category minimums.

Board notes: Per the ACSW Competence Program Guide (2026), registrants must complete a minimum of 40 continuing competence credits during each registration year, which runs on the calendar year (January-December). A professional development plan (goals + activities with start dates, hours, and expected impact) must be established by February 1 annually; the plan may be updated through the year; final evaluation/reflection is due December 31. No specific mandatory subject topics (e.g., ethics or Indigenous/cultural competency) are prescribed as separate required hours in the guide.

Home study: N/A - no statutory scheme.

Board notes: Counselling therapists in Alberta are self-regulated via voluntary professional membership (e.g., ACTA, CCPA) rather than a statutory college. Practitioners who also hold a regulated designation (e.g., Registered Psychologist or Registered Social Worker) are bound by that college's continuing-competence program instead. No statutory CPD hour count applies to the counselling-therapist title itself.

Alberta

Home study: No fixed cap. The Continuing Competence Program (CCP) is a self-directed, goal-based model built on professional judgment; members select activities (which may include self-study, courses, workshops, reading, supervision/consultation, etc.) aligned to their practice. No mandated split between live/interactive and home-study formats.

Board notes: Regulated members must complete 24 hours of continuing competency education and training annually. The CCP cycle runs April 1 to March 31. Members set CCP goals during permit renewal (goal-setting window approx. Jan 30 - Mar 31) and document completed activities across the year (Apr 1 - Jan 31). Provisional psychologists cannot count entrance-to-practice supervision hours toward the CCP. No prescribed mandatory topics; activity selection is flexible and tied to the member's clinical work and populations served.
