How many CPD hours does a Psychologist need in British Columbia?
Psychologists in British Columbia follow a CPD-based model rather than a fixed hour total. Psychologists are regulated by CHCPBC (which absorbed the former College of Psychologists of BC in the June 2024 amalgamation). CHCPBC's new Professional & Quality Practice Program (PQPP) replaces the previous hours-based Quality Assurance Program. The PQPP does NOT set a required number of CPD hours or credits ('quantifying continuing education by setting a number of hours or credits ... is not supported by the literature on QA'). Instead licensees complete annual CPD Touchpoints on a yearly cycle: a Standards Review (self-guided PDF on up to 4 focus standards; 2026 standards are Communications, Consent, and Discontinuing Health Services/Continuity of Care), an open-book Standards Quiz (six case scenarios; no pass score required), and two Guided Self-Reports (Performance and Learning inventories). Touchpoints are estimated at 2-3 hours and are reported in an annual window of October 1 to November 30. Licensees also choose their own professional-development activities focused on preventing patient/client harm. The PQPP officially launches in fall 2026; licensees are not required to complete PQPP activities until launch.
